How to share a single orange between two people who want it? 🍊 🤔
During our virtual event on navigating workplace conflict for the Hinrich Foundation alumni community, our esteem speaker, Ruchira Chaudhary shared this thought-provoking scenario with us.
Certain intriguing solutions were proposed to address this problem. However, the fundamental step that is often overlooked is to ask each person: “Why do you need this orange?”. When resolving conflicts, instead of asking “What do they want?”, asking “Why do they want it?” is crucial so we can delve deeper to understand the underlying reasons.
This is just one of many insightful takeaways from the event. I particularly appreciated Ruchira’s insights on conflict resolution framework and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, which helped me better understand my own conflict style.
